Thank you sir for the article. I worked with a foreign company and always hold the view that if every Ghanaian worker goes about his schedule the way we do, we can easily catch up with the Asians.
You're late when you come in at 7:55am. Work starts at 8 am. Some workers start working by 6:30am.
The working environment is congenial.
The salary is good by Ghanaian standards. Our health is taken care of.
Infractions are sanctioned promptly.
I use to boast that if our MD is made the prime Minister of Ghana things will change for the better and I really mean it. The question is, do our rulers want this positive change? I'm sorry but my cynical opinion is that they don't want it. The status quo fits their agenda.
If there is that level of efficiency, how can there be nepotism, cronyism, inflation of contract costs and all the rest of the negativity that hinders our progress so much!?
So please somebody convince me that my cynical opinion is wrong because I needed that desperately!!
Sermons will not work! Well thought out policies and commitment will do.

Yes, the same Ghanaian who reports on time to work from Monday to Friday in America and Europe, suddenly changes on Sunday to attend Church services half hour to 2 hours late, then return to work on time on Monday once again. You go to the Ghana missions abroad, it is even worse. The Ambassador himself comes to the office late and leaves early. So what is actually our problem?

To me BRING BACK THE BRITISH QUEEN. Ghana WILL change, It was a mistake to get rid of them in the first place. Maybe JB Danquah was right after all. We CANNOT RULE ourselves. It is SAD but TRUE!!!

We chased out the British because we dont want them to rule us. Now we go to UK and CHOP ADRO to be ruled by them. And when they say NO VISA, we insult the Ambassador for it.

I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY AGREE THAT APPEALS DO NOT WORK. IN CIVILIZED COUNTRIES, ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAW IS WHAT MAKES PEOPLE DO THE RIGHT THING. TAKE AWAY THE LAW OR THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAW AND YOU GET WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GHANA. IT IS MIND-BOGGLING WHY GOVERNMENTS IN GHANA DO NOT WANT TO ENFORCE THE LAW TO THE LETTER YET WANT THINGS TO BE NORMAL. PEOPLE ARE STEALING GOVERNMENT VEHICLES, STEALING FROM THE PUBLIC PURSE, PEOPLE NOT PAYING FOR SERVICES (TAXES AT THE PORT), INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT'S BROTHER AND YET GOVERNMENT IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. HUMAN BEINGS NEED TO BE POLICED FOR THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING OR ELSE.....NOTHING WILL BE DONE. USE THE LAW, PUNISH PEOPLE FOR OFFENSES. STOP COVERING UP CRIMES IN THE NAME OF PARTY POLITICS. STOP COVERING UP CRIMES IN THE NAME OF FAMILY MEMBERSHIP. UNLESS AND UNTIL GOVERNMENT ADOPTS THE ATTITUDE OF PUNISHING PEOPLE WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOR, NOTHING WILL CHANGE AND ALL APPEALS WOULD GO NOWHERE.

Just look the VISA Fraud and 4MPs. Fellow Akans ARE DEFENDING that FRAUD and insulting Jon Benjamin. That is our problem right there. A WHITE MAN DOES not see Ewe Ga or whatever. All he sees are NIGGAS. Bring back the QUEEN or we are doomed.

Ghanaians do the right thing in foreign land simple because those countries put systems in place to check each individual.
They do have strong laws, strong policies and strong electronics systems in place. To make the system work. They also review their systems to make sure it stay strong. Not preaching only. That is why Ghanaians do the right things outside the country. Implementing the strong institutions and the rest will follow

A German will not dream because right from beginning she/he knows there is fire ahead. I don't think a Ghanaian will jump in the fire when she/he sees one

I agree with the part that says we should move away from appealing to Ghanaians. What I don't agree with is the comparison with developed countries about their time keeping. See, it is very easy to get caught up in this comparison game if you fail to paint the whole picture properly or compare like-for-like. Whenever there is a tropical rainstorm in Ghana, the heavens do really open up and the water pours down as if a tap has been left open. In that situation, most people are not able to come out of their front door. Of those who do, the majority can't walk down their streets either as a result of flooding or roads becoming muddy or both. Cars are caught up in flooding all the time due to our poor drainage system. The person in Europe or elsewhere hasn't all this to contend with; rain is nowhere near as heavy as in the tropics; there are no muddy roads because the whole place is paved up; they have a good transport network to get everyone to work! Anytime I come to Ghana and get trapped in my own home due to a tropical downpour, that is when the realisation hits me as to why everything comes to a stop whenever there is a heavy downpour. People are held hostages in their homes. I am not making excuses for the innate laziness that is characteristic of the average Ghanaian that requires a whole different writeup, after all, it doesn't rain everyday.
