I find the remarks of Mr. Elvis Sadongo that Ghanaian men resorting to report spouses to WAJU as a ploy rather disturbing and very unfortunate.
Mr Elvis Sadongo, Inspector of Police at the Unit said such men in recent times come to the Unit to report their spouses citing disrespect and irresponsible behaviours apparently for WAJU to talk to them. He described the situation as a ploy by such men because they feel with the increasing awareness of domestic violence and the women rights issues they were being push to the wall by their female partners. "Therefore they think if they should rush to the WAJU while their wives are giving them problems and knowing that when they beat them they would be reported by their wives, it's prudent and safe for the men to come and report first," he explained
Whiles I fully commend the government for the establishment of WAJU to address numerous household violence and abuses; WAJU should not be seen as a resort only for women!
There is no definition that describes that only men are responsible or causes of abuses & violence. In either Kenya or Uganda, it was widely reported that women were increasingly assaulting their husbands.
Mr. Sadongo is rather sending a wrong signal that will tell abused men that you have nowhere to seek redress! He has failed to realize that he is telling men ?Tolerate all the provocations, abuses etc and we will get you when you react?
Unfortunately he did not back his claim with any figures.
It?s a fact that abuse of women either physically or verbally is totally unacceptable but what Mr. Sandongo should realize is that this same fact applies universally to men.
Mr. Sadongo should rather advice his outfit to address every complaint (either from men or women) with the same degree of respect and seriousness as required by law.
