Six months on from his selection as a centre-back in the Africa Cup of Nations team of the tournament, Daniel Amartey has finally completed 90 minutes in the heart of the defence for City.

The Ghanaian played alongside Yohan Benalouane at the Stadium MK and performed reasonably well.

Although he could do with bulking up to ensure he’s not outmuscled, Amartey has the pace and height to compete with strikers, his days in midfield mean he’s comfortable on the ball and he played several line-splitting passes to Leo Ulloa and he showed he has the discipline Benalouane sometimes lacks.

It’s a position Shakespeare says Amartey likes, but if he is to become a great centre-back, rather than a good one, he needs to be given the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the role.

For his 18 months in Leicester, Amartey has been a bit-part utility man, filling in at right-back or in central midfield whenever required.

He’ll never be anything more than that unless he is given one position to master, rather than three positions to be adequate in.
