Letter From The President: Shambolic Opinion Polls

Fri, 3 Dec 2004 Source: J. A. Fukuor/Daily Dispatch

Countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents,

Since I ascended the Black Star Stool, I have taken decisions without actually taking your views into consideration. That?s not to say that I am a despotic leader who does as he pleases. The point is that I don?t know what most of you think. I don?t know your opinions on health, education, sex, consumer protection, discipline, religion etc.

Many of you might say that the radio stations have been doing a good job by allowing people to air their views on various subjects. Well, I don?t listen to radio. I neither have the time nor the inclination to listen to the uncontrolled ranting and raving on the over one hundred radio stations in the country. Moreover, it has been proven that the radio phone-in and discussion programmes do not offer a scientific basis for assessing public opinion on any issue ? callers are planted and the discussants are often biased and ignorant. As a result, I have been engaging in a trial and error type of decision-making.
