Letter From The President: GBC at 70? ? Sell it off

Wed, 16 Mar 2005 Source: J. A. Fukuor/Daily Dispatch

Countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents,

I hate ?state-owned enterprises.? Most SOEs in Sikaman are inefficient, unproductive, corrupt and worse of all, a huge drain on national resources. The least I expect of any company or corporation is for it to break even ? if it is unable to reap profits. When a corporation?s sole efficiency is in loss-making it should be closed down or sold. That?s why I love the on-going divestiture of many SOEs. Moreover, as I have said several times, government has no business in business. I must say that the decision to divest SOEs was one of the best things Jerry Boom?s government tried to do. If only they had gone about it in a transparent manner, I would have said ?kudos? to them.

I am holding on to my ?kudos? because, Jerry Boom?s administration also failed to place the state broadcasting network ? GBC ? on divestiture. The GBC is one of the most useless corporations I?ve seen in any part of the world. It has a large workforce, most of whom work a few hours a day and get paid for doing nothing. The GBC doesn?t make any profit, even though it should have been the choicest medium of advertising in the country.
