Takoradi, Aug. 21, GNA - Daniel Adu-Gyamfi, a Takoradi based golfer won the 18th GOIL Seniors Open Competition which began at the Takoradi Sports Club on Saturday.
He won the 36 hole competition with 156 gross points by outplaying four others in the men's main scratch competition to lift the trophy and other GOIL products.
Gyimah Boakye of Tema won the second position 158 points while J. K. Simpson of the Awaso Sports Clubs placed third with 161 gross points. The fourth and fifth prizes went to R.E. Koomson of Tarkwa and D. Addo of the Achimota Club with 166 and 168 gross points each. The two-day competition, which was sponsored by the Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL), saw 50 golfers registering for the event. The 36-hole competition was open to all senior men and lady golfers from all over the country.
Mr. P. K. Pumpuni of the Air Force Club won in the Men's handicap with 138 net points while the second and third positions went to S. K. Appiah from Kumasi with 141 net score and E.Y.G. Kumagyi from Achimota Club with 141 net score.
Dr. I. K. Abban won the (Men) 65 years and above competition with 203 gross points over Mr. Mike Erzan of the Takoradi Club who scored 217 gross points.
In the Ladies scratch competition, F. Etwi-Barimah won with 166 gross points over C. Price and Ama Morgan who scored 181 and 182 gross points respectively.
A Special prize was presented to Doctor E.K. Tagoe for being the oldest and yet active golf player at the age of 85 years. Veteran Mona Captan won in the support group with 150 gross score while P. Sagoe and R.K. Sulemana also won in the men's event with a net score of 65 and 66 points respectively.
In the scratch Group B event, A. Amoakohene won with 163 gross with G.W.K. Instiful taking the second position with 170 gross points. Ms. M. Amo won the Ladies - 55 years and above main event with a net score of 145 to beat Madam Sophia Horner-Sam, Deputy Minister of Ports and Railways who had 149 net score.
Mr. Charles Darko, who represented the Managing Director of GOIL said the company had sponsored the tournament for the past five years. He said the focus of the sponsorship was meant to afford the elderly golfers the opportunity to meet the younger ones, interact and engage in exercises while offering advice for the improvement of the services of the company.
Mr. Darko assured the golfers that GOIL will continually improve on its services.
Professor George Instiful, President of the Ghana Golfers Association (GGA) thanked the management of GOIL for their continual support of the tournament.
He assured the members that the Association would continually work hand in hand to improve the play of golf in the country. Each of the participants were presented with GOIL products and other prizes for participating.
