Tema, Sep. 21, GNA - Samuel Afari Dartey returned a net score of 70 to win the maiden Salto Invitational Golf Championship played at the Tema Country Golf Course on Saturday.
Dartey who defeated Ernest Opoku on count-back for playing 51 and 42 Back and Front with a Handicap of 23, will now be playing to a new Handicap to be determined by the Handicap committee. Ernest Asare took the third position with 782 net, beating J. Otoo on count-back while Kwabena Boakye placed fifth with 73 net. In the ladies segment Esther Antwi came first with 70 net, beating veterans Victoria Adjei and Grace Amoah on count-back. The one-day Shut-Gun event which was sponsored by Aeon Limited, local representatives of Salto International, dealers in security locks, attracted about 120 golfers.
Mr Kwaku Okyere, Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club, praised the company for supporting the club in its developmental efforts and expressed the hope that other corporate bodies would assist them. Dr Felix Frempong, President of the Ghana Golf Association called on golf clubs to develop programmes for the youth to enable them to develop their talents.
He expressed the hope that Ghana would present a team in the golf competition for the 2012 Olympic Games scheduled for London. Mr Victor Hage, Africa Regional Representative of Salto, said the company would continue to support the promotion and development of the game in the ensuing years. 21 Sept 09
