Maxwell Tetteh tops at Nokia Golf for Peace

Maxwell Tetteh returned gross 72 and net 67 playing off handicap 5 to emerge champion of the main event at last Saturday’s maiden NOKIA Corporate Golf for Peace at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra.

Organized by The Golfer newspaper and Supreme Sports Magazine and sponsored mainly by Nokia’s Lumia phone brand with the aim to promote peace in Ghana regarding the upcoming 2012 Elections on Friday through the game of golf, the competition teed off to a great success and the organizers are delighted with the turnout of about 60 golfers. “Undoubtedly, the tournament was a success to a large extent. The sponsorship from Nokia was awesome and we appreciate the regular golfers for turning up to pledge their support for peace,” said Collins Oppong, Head of Marketing and Publicity at The Golfer.

Mr. Oppong continued: “Understandably, these are individuals with amazing influences in the society so getting them to appreciate the need to enhance the peace we seek and influence others to observe same is a big achievement.”

In the event, Maxwell Tetteh received a huge trophy and hamper from Vits Instant Noodles for winning the one day 18-hole event. Up in second place was Kevin Quinn who got a trophy and hamper from Vits Instant Noodles after returning gross 90 and net 69 playing off handicap 21 to beat into 3rd place R. K. Mensah who playing off handicap 4, returned 74 gross to net 70. Mensah received a hamper from Guinness and Vits Instant Noodles as his prize.

Joy Arkutu won the ladies competition after beating Elizabeth Aku Yabah into the runner-up spot on countback. Playing off handicap 15, Arkutu grossed 88 for a 73 net whilst Yabah grossed 89 off handicap 16 to also return net 73. Both ladies went home with a trophy and hamper from Vits Instant Noodles.

The Professionals were not left out of competition and T.K. Cudjoe claimed the first prize of a trophy, Black Label from Guinness and a hamper from Vits Instant Noodles following a gross of 69. T.K. Govinous took second place on gross 72 and went home with hampers from both Guinness and Vits Instant Noodles.

The tournament was also an occasion for first-timers/beginners and prospective golfers as they enjoyed a rare opportunity to start playing golf through a Golf Clinic that was held as part of the event.

R. Bawa won the Beginners event grossing 26 through 4 holes and received a trophy and Vits Instant Noodles for his efforts, leaving the organisers ecstatic of their modest gains from this, their first ever tournament.

“The few first timers that turned up also showed great interest in golf and are keen on learning the game. As event house and keen followers of golf in Ghana, we are hopeful that similar golf events will soon roll out to benefit the larger society,” Mr. Collins Oppong asserted.
