McCauley, Antwi excel at Rotary charity golf

Accra, Mar. 19, GNA - Phil McCauley and Esther Antwi produced some immaculate golf skills to scale over 45 golfers, as they were crowned champions in the male and female divisions respectively of the "Swing for a Child" tournament in aid of the disadvantaged staged at the Tema Country Golf Course on Saturday.

McCauley who returned a net score of 62 to win the event pushed favourite Nana Antwi-Bosiako who prior to the event, was tipped to carry the day to a distant fourth position.

Antwi-Bosiako returned a net score of 67, three short of what he returned last weekend to win the Tema Country Club monthly golf tournament.

But his wife Esther, who won the ladies competition in the Rotary organised event, consoled him with her achievement.

Thirteen year-old pupil of the Ghana International School Catto Niccolo beat Jeorge Bersterman on countback after both had returned a net score of 65 to place second in the male event.

Francisca Vandyck and Zimbabwean Shupi Mapuranga were second and third respectively in the ladies event with net scores of 68 and 70 respectively.

It was the fourth edition of the annual Swing for a child competition put together by the Accra West Rotary Club to raise 20 million cedis in aid of pupils of 10 special (disadvantaged) schools including the Dzorwulu Special School, the Osu Children's Home and the Battor Special School.

The Accra West Club has also received approval from Rotary International to rehabilitate the playing grounds of the Osu Children Home at the cost of 3,500 pounds.

Quite apart from this, it has proposed to Rotary International to provide some computers to the Dzorwulu Special School and an access road from the main entrance of the Akropong School for the Blind to the campus.

The one-day 18-hole full handicap event also marked the centenary celebration of Rotary International.
