A lone ‘handicapper’, Enoch Owusu closed with a remarkable 8-under 64 to seal his second MTN Classic win in the Men Group A at the Tema Country Golf Club. On a tournament that has built a solid reputation on the golfing calendar in its third year, Owusu prides himself for capping the double after winning the maiden edition in 2011.
“It feels good to make it double within three years of the competition,” Owusu told The Golfer newspaper, adding, “I look forward to make the cut for the qualifiers in the next major to start playing as a pro,” he said.
En route to his 2013 win, he played a bogeyless round where he sank five birdies on the front nine in the light breeze of the morning. They were the par-4 first, par-5 third, par-3 fourth, par-5 fifth and par-3 eight.
On the back nine, he birdied the par-4 fifteenth and par-5 sixteenth to complete the round amidst 11 pars in all. He took home a stunning trophy, Samsung Galaxy and other souvenirs from MTN.
Patrick Tender was three shots off the pace for second place after returning a net score of 67 off 6 to beat into third place Omane-Brempong on 69 off 14. S.K Ayornu came fourth on a net score of 69 off 4 on countback.
Meanwhile, in the Ladies Group A, Mona Captan appeared unfazed about her lingering knee problem to lead a pack of strong field for a substantial victory. Having gone winless for a while, the evergreen Mona shot a net score of 71 off handicap 9 after sinking a lone birdie, nine sumptuous pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey. Florence Etwi-Barimah came second on 74 followed by Mary Owusu-Baah with 75.
In the Men Group B, Seth Amoah shot a net score of 61 off handicap 18 for first place finish, while Sir Sam Jonah posted a net score of 68 off handicap 22 to place second after beating Tang Wan into third place on 69 off 16.
Cathy Boateng stayed in the hunt for victory with a net score of 72 in the Ladies Group B, while Petrina Galley finished second on a net score of 74. Mr. Mike Ikpoki, CEO MTN said that his outfit remains committed to the growth of golf in Ghana.
He entreated golfers to take advantage of the exciting value added services from MTN such as the MTN Toll Free services and the Vehicle Tracking Device services in order to enrich their lives.
Winners in the various category received trophies, souvenirs and Mobile phone devices. Stanbic Bank supported the event.
