Tafo (E/R), Dec 9, GNA - Kofi Yeboah of the Tafo Golf Club defeated Osei Cobbina of the Royal Golf Club of Kumasi on the 'sudden death' rule to win the 12th Annual Tafo Open Golf Championship, which ended at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana's (CRIG) Golf Course at Tafo in the Eastern Region on Sunday.
The two returned a gross score of 140 each, thus forcing the champion to be decided on the sudden death rule, which was played on three occasions and was eventually won by Yeboah.
Godwin Sai took the third position with 141 gross, beating Amalie Ernest on count-back while David Nazareth placed fifth with 144 gross. Mishida Mensah won the Ladies category with 170 gross followed by Grace Afriyie at second position with 178 gross after she beat Mona Captan on count-back, while Beatrice Vetsche-Bempong took the fourth position with 185 gross.
In the junior's category, Christian Mbii came first with 62 net, Gyimay Yahya came second with 70 net with Nana Yeboah taking the third position with 72 gross.
Unique Trust Financial Services sponsored the two-day 36-Hole Scratch event opened to amateur golfers throughout the country. Dr Francis Oppong, Captain of the Tafo Golf Club thanked the company for the sponsorship and called on other corporate bodies and institutions to help develop the sport.
Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Chief Executive Officer of Unique Trust Financial Services, who is also the President of the Tafo Golf Club, debunked the notion that golf was for the rich in the society. He advocated the setting up of an Educational Fund for the poor and the needy to enable them to take active interest in the game. He donated an amount of 5,000 Ghana cedis (50 million cedis) towards the set up o the Fund.
