WKA Champs- Two Ghanaians win bronze medals

Thu, 11 Nov 2010 Source: --

Joseph Mingle and Lawrence Nmai Nyanyo, 80Kg and 85 Kg fighters respectively of the

Ghana Kickboxing Team won bronze at the just ended World Kickboxing Association

(WKA) World Championships 2010 held in Edinburgh – Scotland, from 27th October to

3rd November, 2010 where approximately 2,000 athletes participated.

Ghana was the only country representing the African Continent.

Both fighters who participated in elimination bouts of a keenly contested Thai

Boxing Category won two out of three fights each to emerge as Bronze medallists.

There were approximately 25-40 contestants in each Category.

Lawrence Nmai Nyanyo tried to prove his worth in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

category of 40 fighters but unfortunately pulled out on his way to the medal zone

due to a Knee injury. He however placed 5th in the MMA category.

Lawrence and Joseph were issued certificates of participation and a bronze medal each.

Ghana’s participation was beneficial because the fighters gained rich tournament

experience for future engagements and could manifest their places in the

international ranking.

The Ghana Kickboxing Association (GKBA) expresses its gratitude to Ms. Ingeborg

Smith, Austrian Consul and life patron of the Association for her immense support

and contribution towards the Team’s participation in the Championship.

The Association also extends its appreciation to the National Sports Council and the

Sports Ministry for facilitating the fighters’ trip to Scotland.

The GKBA, however, requests for sponsorship from companies and individual

philanthropists for the successful up-keep of the fighters as they remain in camp in

preparation towards up-coming International Competitions on the Association’s

calendar.

Mixed Martial Arts and Kickboxing in general is an upcoming sport internationally

and it is very important that we continue not to miss out on participating in

international events. The success of our fighters proves that we have recognition on

the international scene.
