The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), in agreement with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), has confirmed Ghana’s readiness to host the maiden edition of the Africa Para-cycling Championship in December this year.

This would be a major boost for the cycling federation as Ghana’s progress in the sport has made a significant impact on the continent, hence the confidence in the country to host the championship.

This announcement was made known by the Vice-President of the African Cycling Confederation (ACC), Dr Mohammed Wagih Azzam, when he paid a courtesy call on the acting Director-General of the NSA, Majeed Bawa, at his office last Wednesday.

The visit by the ACC boss to the NSA director formed part of his three-day official visit to Ghana.

He said, “Ghana has developed in paracyling and giving the right to host the first edition of the competition would go a long way to further develop the sport in the country.

“The Union of Cycling International (UCI) would put Ghana’s quest to organise the tour of Ghana on its calendar and efforts would be made to support the country hosts the competition.”

He said his visit was to familiarise and build a good relationship with all federations in Africa and interact with major stakeholders in sports at every country.

While in the country, he met with the leadership of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

The NSA boss commended Dr Azzam for his decision to help Ghana cycling address their issues and expressed his readiness to support him achieve his goal to the fullest.

“We are all interested in resolution to get cycling on the right path, and Dr Azzam’s presence must bring an end to all the problems facing the sport,” he stated.

He urged the ACC boss to continue supporting the country to develop the sport as resources remain a challenge to the lesser-known sports.
