First ever Greater

Accra Sports Authority Blind Sport (Goalball) Nucleus Teams Championship

held

The Greater

Accra Sports Authority in collaboration with the Sports Wing of the Ghana Blind

Union held its first ever Greater Accra Blind Sport (Goalball) Nucleus Teams

Championship at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts on Friday, 28th March, 2014.

In all, Four

(4) Goalball teams comprising two (2) female and two (2) male teams from the

University of Ghana and Accra Metro all visually impaired, participated in the

maiden Nucleus team Championship for the visually impaired.

The

championship was used to raise a Regional Nucleus Blind Sports (Goalball) team

for further preparation towards participation in local and international championships

as well as create awareness on Goalball as an emerging sporting discipline for Athletes

with visual impairment in the Greater Accra region and the nation in general.

In his

opening remarks, the Director of Sports of the Greater Accra Regional Sports

Authority; Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jnr., succinctly stressed on the importance of

Goalball as a medium of offering the blind in the society the opportunity to

express themselves through sports. He

challenged the visually impaired athletes to give a good account of themselves

to attract interest and sponsorship for the growth of Goalball.

Madam Alice

Attipoe, Ag. Director-General of the National Sports Authority who graced the

occasion with the core Management members of the National Sports Authority, commended

the Greater Accra Sports Directorate for its ingenuity and innovations in

sports development and promotion. She

further applauded the efforts of the Directorate for its ability to fund its

development activities without recourse to the National Sports Authority.

Besides pledging

her full support to develop and promote Goalball in the Ten (10) regions of

Ghana, Madam Alice Attipoe promised to let Goalball feature prominently on the

2014 sporting calendar of the National Sports Authority.

She however

called on corporate Ghana to financially and materially support the Authority

in its quest to raise the standard of Goalball and other sports disciplines in

the country.

At the end

of the championship, the ladies team of the University of Ghana won 7 - 5

against Accra Metro team whiles the Accra Metro Men’s team beat their

counterpart from the University of Ghana by 7 – 3 goal margin. Very attractive Cash

prizes were awarded to

winners in respective categories.
