Advise youth against electoral violence - Imam

Nsawam (E/R ), Aug. 17, GNA - Alhaji Imam Hashimin Abdulai-Rahaman chief Imam of Akuapem South has said that while religious leaders are praying for a peaceful and successful elections, the youth must be advised against acts likely to create confusion and violence during and after the period.

He said traditional and religious leaders should take steps to protect the youth and prevent politicians from taking advantage of them to create trouble for their selfish ambitions.

Alhaji Abdulai-Rahaman was speaking when staff of the Municipal Directorate of National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) met members of Zongo communities to sensitise them on the need to ensure a peaceful and successful election in December at Adoagyiri on Friday.

He stated that the people should elect a right and discerning leader to promote the development of the country without violence. Alhaji Rahaman advised the Muslim youth to take part in political activities but said they must conduct themselves in a manner that will project the tenets and virtues of Islam.

Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu, the field officer of the Commission, advised members of the communities not to indulge in double voting and defacing and destroying the posters of political opponents, adding that, they would be dealt with when caught.

He said gone were the days when political opponents perceived each other as enemies and did things to hurt each other and said Ghana is one country, one people with one destiny.

Mr.Asiedu said the sensitisation would be extended to other identifiable groups, including political parties at their functions. Meanwhile, the Akuapem South Municipal Directorate of the NCCE will organise a peace march involving security Agencies, clubs, women and youth groups and political parties in the municipality.
