Kumasi, Nov.12, GNA - Most Reverend Lukas Abadamloora, Catholic Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, has commended Most Reverend Peter Akwasi Sarpong, Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi for his immense contributions towards the growth and development of the church in the Ashanti Region and the country as a whole. He noted that the Catholic Church in the region, which was at the verge of collapsing, saw an enviable improvement during the 38-year period of Bishop Sarpong.

Bishop Abadamloora, who is also the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference of Ghana (GCBC) was speaking at the end of the week-long Annual Plenary Assembly of the Conference in Kumasi on Saturday. The weeklong conference attended by 22 Bishops from all over the country was aimed at discussing national issues to help develop the church and the country. The celebration was also to rededicate Ghana to the most sacred heart of Jesus.

Bishop Abadamloora stated that, "Kumasi can now feel the presence of the growth and worth of Catholicism", and called on other Christian leaders to emulate his example.

In attendance were Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyeman, one of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential aspirants, Nana Adusei Poku, Akyempemhene and other dignitaries.

His Eminence Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson, Archbishop of Cape Coast, in his sermon advised Ghanaians to have an experience of the love of God in celebrating the country's 50th Anniversary. He called on them to have in mind God's purpose of the jubilee year, which is a year of resting, saying, they should recognise the supremacy of God and not abuse the golden celebration. Cardinal Turkson urged all to be pure before God by staying away from injustices and unpatriotic tendencies. The celebration was crowned with patriotic songs amidst the waving of the national flag.

At the end of the conference, the Most Reverend Lukas Abadamloora was re-elected as the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference for another three-year-term of office. In a related development, a 520-paged book titled "A treasury of Catholic Devotion and Novenas" was launched.
