Accra, Nov. 20, GNA - The Mataheko District of the Assemblies of God Church on Tuesday feted over 70 aged in the district's catchment area to show appreciation and care for their long-term contribution towards the growth of the church.
The programme, which was jointly organised by the men and women's ministries in the District, was also used as a platform for the aged to share their values, ideas and experiences regarding social and Christian living.
Mr Winfred Asamoah-Quampah, District Men's Ministry Representative, said there was the need to embrace the aged in the church to avoid loneliness and also encourage them to continue to contribute to the growth and development of the church.
"The aged in general are regarded as people of immense wisdom and experience and so we as a District initiated this programme to interact with them as well as tapping their rich experiences."
Mr Asamoah-Quampah noted that with the current trend of modernisation where the youth had little knowledge about the history of their communities, it was important that such older generations were entertained in the church and society as a whole to enable them to impart their knowledge.
Mrs Mercy Tetteh-Quarshie, Women's Ministry Representative of the District and the initiator of the programme, told GNA that she had the vision three years ago but could not implement it due to the lack of funds.
She said it first started with a prayer festival throughout the 10 churches which made up the District and added that funds were raised through the support of some individuals and the churches. Rev. Justice Darkwah, District Pastor, advised Christians to show love and compassion for the vulnerable in society, adding, "As Christians, we must volunteer to serve humanity".
Ms Helena Aweke, one of the aged, urged the youth to take Christianity seriously and serve God diligently to enable them to inherit eternal blessings.
The district also presented gifts to the aged for their meritorious service.
Ms Elizabeth Lawson, a sixty-year-old woman who heads the Children's Department of the Holy Ghost Revival, Assemblies of God Church, Odorkor received three separate gifts for her dedicated service.
