Takoradi, July 18, GNA - The Knights of St John International, a friendly society within the Catholic Church, on Monday expressed worry over the increasing attraction to wealth and materialism in society.

A communiqué copied to the Ghana News Agency at the end of the eighth Biennial Convention of the Cape Coast Grand Commandery and Ladies Auxiliary of the society, said the open-mindedness of society was gradually eroding the understanding of “what is social evil and sin.”

It said the introduction of untraditional elements into society and the exposure of the youth to unacceptable behaviour had become the bane of civil society.

The communiqué signed by Brigadier-General Naaba Sigri Bewong, Grand President of the Commandery, rejected suggestion that that homosexuality and lesbianism should be legalized.

“We recommit ourselves to the venerable teachings of the Catholic Church on the sanctity of human life and the sacredness of the institution of marriage as well as family values,” it said.

The communiqué also condemned acts of some social commentators and political party fanatics who indulge in insults and said “As a fraternal society we encourage and develop the spirit of love of country and its institutions”.
