Church demands media responsibility

Kumasi, Aug 10, GNA - Evangelist Michael Osei-Owusu of the Agric-Nzema Congregation of the Church of Christ in Kumasi has said the media, especially television, should show more responsibility by avoiding screening programmes and pictures likely to corrupt the morals of the youth.

He said it was important the media ensured that materials that either depicted violence or pornographic were taken off the screen. Evangelist Osei-Owusu blamed the recent upsurge in immorality, indecency, rape and defilement cases on what he said, was the pornographic content of some programmes and pictures in the media. He was speaking during the "Youth Week Celebration" of the Church at Agric-Nzema in Kumasi on Sunday.

The celebration was aimed at empowering the youth to prove equal to the challenges ahead of them.

Evangelist Osei-Owusu said it was about time the National Media Commission put in place stringent measures to deal with pornography and immoral content of programmes and pictures that were having negative influence on young people.

He urged the youth of the church to be "examples of change", telling them that, "being God's children today and His promise for the future" they occupied a unique position in society. Mr. Blankson Amoaben, President of the Church's Youth Association, said the celebration was part of activities to help to prepare the youth for the future and to become responsible.
