Letter To Dr. Adbul Rahman Sumait-Kuwait

(DIRECTOR GENERAL-AFRICA MUSLIM AGENCY, GHANA BRANCH)

MERCY SOCIAL CENTER AND ITS PROBLEMS

I would be very grateful if you could in your Allah fearing way listen, understand and take it in a good faith to help me with your maximum cooperation to solve the prevailing problems of the orphanage centre at the Japan Motors near Ashaley Botwey, Accra-Ghana.

I will invariably pray that, the almighty Allah showers his mercies and blessing on you. With African Muslim Agency, in fact you have done what is expected of every Muslim in the world more especially Africa and is only Allah that will reward you.

Notwithstanding all the good things and ideas your outfit has put in place and are willing to do more , there are several attempts by your own people ranging from the country Director, down to the subordinates to thwart the effort of the organization.

Among these are:

? The orphans are wayward and totally corrupt. Most of them out of hunger are now stealing just to enable them survive.

? No one respects the other in the centre any longer. There is nothing like I am the elder and he is the younger.

? There are several occasions that I personally went to the centre upon the information I had and found out that, at the hours between 7:00pm to 9:00pm, many of the orphans, approximately 30 of the orphans could not get food to eat from the dining hall, and the excuse was that the food could not reach them.

? Most of the orphans are seen to be roaming about the streets of Ashaley Botwey, Nana Krom, Maidzo and Madina between the hours of 11:00pm to 12:00 midnight just to get food from friends and family members.

? Because of the above problems be devilling the orphans, most of them now engage in internet fraud, gambling and ‘’Sakawa’’ Business etc.

To be honest to with you, out of the 11 orphans that completed school in the 2004 academic year, 8 are seriously engaged in the internet fraud business, 1 is learning a mechanical trade and 2 are in the tertiary institution.

? With those at the tertiary institutions most of them are striving seriously to pay their own school fess. Mean while there has been series of invitation by management to assist them pay their school fee after taking their receipt and even went ahead to let them feel forms etc. yet their plight has not being attended to.

? My investigation reveals that even the monthly allowances are no longer given to them.

? The centre is one of the dirtiest centres one could ever see among the orphanage centre s in Ghana.

? Their rooms are very bad, dirty and even most of their mattresses are very bad.

? With clothes, forget it. Most of them use very bad clothes and sandals not even soap to bath let alone using tooth paste to brush their teeth. So you see them dirty roaming on the street.

? I want to bring it to your notice that, they do not learn this time. Because of that their academic performances are seriously deteriorating.

? Because of lack of control, in the centre most of them are now following peer groups that are likely to lead them in to bad situations/habits.

? One of the orphans was some time ago butchered by an Indian hemp smoker by the lake side where they go to fetch water just because the school on its own cannot provide water for the orphans.

? All the supervisors taking care of the orphans are virtually doing nothing to promote the interest of the orphans let alone the centre. The Quran memorization centre is totally dead.

? In brief, what I want to say is that, the orphans are seriously suffering and something needs to be done as early as possible to redeem the image of Islam and the Africa Muslim Agency as a whole.

Actually, I saw the necessity in writing to you based on the fact that, I have tried on several occasions to meet Management such that we can collectively sit on a round table to address these issues but all efforts proved futile.

I wrote a letter inviting them for a round table dialogue, they did not mind me. I issued a treat of inviting in journalists both local and international to take coverage of the centre and also interview the boys about the unfortunate treatment they receive and the trauma they go through, yet they did not bother to respond to my call.

At this juncture, I think it is a calculated attempt to put Islam and Africa Muslim Agency to disgrace and there is the need for the highest authority and every level headed Muslim to stand against these unfortunate moves and act now to protect the image of our dear religion ISLAM.

I am of the fervent hope that my letter will be given the necessary attention.

Thank you
