Most Reverend Gabriel Edoe Kumordji
Pope Francis has appointed Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom, Most Reverend Gabriel Edoe Kumordji SVD, as the new Bishop of the Keta-Akatsi Diocese of the Catholic Church in Ghana.
The appointment follows the acceptance of the resignation of Most Rev. Anthony Kwami Adanuty, then Bishop of the Keta-Akatsi Catholic Diocese in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The news on the Bishop’s appointment was contained in statement signed by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency Jean Marie Speich and announced by the Apostolic Nunciature in Accra on Thursday, March 16, 2017.
The statement, however, did not make provision for the now vacant seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom.
Bishop Kumordji succeeds Most Rev. Anthony Kwami Adanuty who tendered in his resignation after attaining the ‘canonical’ age of 75 years, and had it confirmed by the Pope on Thursday, April 7, 2016.
A statement from the Vatican to the Church in Ghana stated that, "The Holy Father, on 7th April 2016, accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Keta-Akatsi (Ghana), presented by His Excellency Most Rev. Anthony Kwami Adanuty, in accordance with Canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law."
The statement also announced the Bishop of the Ho Catholic diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu as interim head of the Keta-Akatsi diocese.
Bishop Anthony Kwami Adanuty becomes first emeritus bishop of the Keta-Akatsi doicese, serving in various capacities as chairman of the department of Judicial matters, chairman of the department of social communications, chairman of the standard newspapers and magazines limited, chairman of the department of socio-economic development and as the Vice president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
About Rev. Fr. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji
Most. Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji was born on March 24, 1956 in Accra as the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kumordji. After his secondary school education at St. Aquinas School in Accra, he undertook philosophical studies at St Victor's Major Seminary in Tamale (1976-79) joined the SVD novitiate in 1979 and professed the first vows on September 8, 1980.
He had a three-year theological study at the Tamale Seminary from 1980-1983 and ordained a priest by Archbishop Dominic Andoh on July 14, 1985 in Accra after completing a one-year pastoral experience in the Sunyani Diocese.
He was appointed Apostolic Vicar of Donkorkrom on January 19, 2010.
