Rastafarian destroys idols

Adafienu, Aug 28, GNA - A Rastafarian has destroyed two giant community idols at Adafienu, a fishing community near Denu in the Ketu South District, labelling them "spiritual nuisance".

Togbe Anyigbanya, the Rastafarian, said the idols were enemies of development and alleged that they were not capable of protecting the people.

The Rastafarian's action provoked angry reactions from some people who overpowered him before he could destroy other deities in the town. They later handed him over to the police.

Togbe Anyigbanya, now on police enquiry bail, told the GNA that a group of soothsayers assembled by elders of the town sometime last week to find out about the fate of the town revealed that a foreign idol spirit more powerful than those erected at Adafienu was on a visit to the area and was responsible for all setbacks.

He said it stood to reason that the local gods were unable to protect the people and therefore had no business being where they were and had to be destroyed.

The Aflao police confirmed the story and said the suspect would be put before court for causing damage. 27 Aug 09
