Most Reverend Peter Sarpong, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Kumasi, on Saturday called on the clergy to foster unity and reconciliation in the Church and the society as a whole.

Priests must construct bridges that would unite people of various ethnic, religious and social backgrounds in the Church to promote unity in the larger society, he said.

Most Reverend Sarpong was delivering the homily at the Episcopal Ordination and installation of the Most Reverend John Bonavecture Kwofie, as the Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese of the Catholic Church at Takoradi.

His Eminence Peter Cardinal Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Peace and Justice, performed the ceremony and was assisted by Most Reverend Jean-Marie Speieh, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Reverend Matthias Kobena Nketsiah, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast and other Bishops.

Most Reverend Kwofie, 56, is the fourth Bishop of the diocese and belonged to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit.

Most Reverend Sarpong asked Most Reverend Kwofie to work in concert with Bishops of the Church to eliminate greed, selfishness and other social vices that were becoming the hallmarks of the society and were promoting immorality.

He said the new bishop must resolutely preach against corruption, nepotism, political deceit, exploitation and the abuse and commercialization of religion.

Most Reverend Sarpong urged the Church in the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese to accept Most Reverend Kwofie as their Bishop and to give him the necessary support to carry out his responsibilities and rejoice that God has provided them with a Bishop.
