The A.M.E Zion Church has presented GHc 6000 in support of the 3rd June 2015 flood and fire victims.

The amount was donated to the Despite Group of Companies Endowment Fund at Abeka Junction in Accra.

A delegation from the church made the presentation on behalf of the Presiding Bishop Rt Rev Dr Seth O. Lartey.

The delegation was made up of Mr Ransford Vanni-Amoah the A.M.E Zion Church Humanitarian Commission and his Vice, Mr ThomasYallow, the Rev Anthony Mensah, Bishop’s Administrative Officer of the East Ghana Conference of the church, the Presiding Elder of the Accra Central District, Rev Felix Dodoras as well as two women executives, Mrs Prudence Hagan-Banini and Mrs Theresa Bleyi

The Vice Chairman of the A.M.E Zion Church Humanitarian Commission Mr. Thomas Yallow, said the vision of Bishop S.O Lartey in setting up the commission was to position the church to respond positively to the needs of society in times of emergencies.

Such support Mr Yallow said it also formed part of the church’s social responsibility.

“This donation was made possible through the contribution of our church members who want to support a worthy course by putting smiles back on the faces of our brethren who were victims of the 3rd June flood and fire disaster.”

The Rev Anthony Mensah, Bishop’s Administrative Officer of the East Ghana Conference of the church, said the lesson from the disaster was for Ghanaians to exhibit discipline and abide by the by-laws of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to ensure sanity, especially in the layout of cities and towns.

“In fact because of high level of indiscipline in our society, rainfall which should actually be a source of blessings will be seen as a curse because of bad attitudes like building at unauthorised places and disposal of wastes in the drainage systems, which block the free flow of water.”

The Rev Anthony Mensah, reiterated the need for the church to rise up and speak against practices which are impacting negatively on the environment, adding that “we must use the pulpit and make people understand that the dividend in ensuring aclean environment will see improvement in not only a healthy people, but a meaningful socio-economic growth in all spheres of nation life”.

A representative of the Despite Group of companies, Nana Yaa Konadu, thanked the A.M.E Zion Church for the contribution and said it would“change the lives of our brothers and sisters who were victims of the disaster”.

She added: “We know a lot of organisations have set up funds in support of the victims, but choosing to join forces with the Despite group, demonstrates the A.M.E Zion Church’s hope in us that their contributions will be used for a worthy course.”
