Awukugua (E/R), Aug. 5, GNA - Madam Owusua Agyare, a retired nursing officer at Awukugua in the Eastern Region, has called on the Christian Council of Ghana to advice churches to come out with regulations against expensive funeral and burial rites for members.
She said it was about time that Christians mourn their departed ones in modest ways for others to emulate.
Madam Agyare, who gave the advice at a cleanup exercise at some cemeteries at Awukugua at the weekend, said it was important that people show greater respect to the living than the dead.
She said the Church must create a condition to make people to live happy, healthy and strong before their death.
Madam Agyare said it was unimaginable that some old men and women were not catered for, did not get good food to eat and or live in decent houses but when they died they were accorded with expensive funerals.
"Why is it that the family did not use the GH¢1,000 to GH¢4,000 in buying coffin a alone, which will be destroyed by terminates in a short time to take care of the person when he or she was alive.
"Are we really mourning forward or backward with these negative acts," she asked.
