Baba Yunus Alhassan, a Chartered Accountant, has tasked Muslims to integrate their faith into their respective professions and by so doing maintain all ethical boundaries that the religion imposes on them.

Speaking at the second edition of the 2026 M.A. Mujahid Ramadan lecture series organized by the Ghana Academy of Muslim Professionals (GAMP) in the Bono Regional capital, Sunyani, he emphasized that Muslims must work to "Islamize" various professions – integrating faith with everyday activities like medicine, engineering, and finance.

Presenting on the topic ‘How Islamic micro finance can serve as an effective tool for poverty reduction and SME growth,’ at the GNAT Hall, Baba Yunus said: “Islamic finance is about aligning financial practices with Shariah principles, ensuring transactions are halal (permissible) and free from riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and maisir (gambling).”

He outlined some key Islamic finance products that Muslims can look forward to once the Islamic or non-interest banking is rolled out in the coming months.

He mentioned Qard Hasan, Interest-free loans for individuals and businesses; Murabahah, Cost-plus financing for asset purchases; Musharaka, Partnerships with shared risk and profit; Mudarabah, Profit-sharing partnerships between investors and entrepreneurs and Ijarah, Islamic leasing for equipment and assets.

“These products focus on asset-based financing, transparency, and fairness. They aim to support businesses and individuals while adhering to Islamic principles. In Ghana, exploring these products can help Muslims benefit from Islamic finance, and may support SMEs and entrepreneurs,” he said.

The lecture which took place on February 22 was in collaboration with Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA) branch of the Sunyani Technical University.

The train Ramadan lecture moves to Takoradi, Western Regional capital on the March 1, 2026. Awudu Damani Musah, a Development Consultant, will present on the topic: Faith Based Finance for Economic Justice: The Role of Islamic Banking, Zakat and Waqf in Ghana Development.

GAMP's theme for this year's lectures "Islamic Finance and Social Justice: Pathway to Poverty Reduction and SME Empowerment in Ghana," is strategic in the sense that it helps with the wider Islamic finance advocacy at a time Ghana is getting ready for a rollout of the industry.

Ghana's Islamic finance strides

Ghana has in the last few years made significant strides in the area of advocacy for the adoption of Islamic finance (non-interest banking and finance).

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) in January 2026 published final guidelines for the upcoming industry with modalities for the rollout of banking windows and full-fledged banks.

Lead advocacy groups like the Islamic Finance Research Institute of Ghana (IFRIG) continue to lead advocacy efforts through a series of activities aimed at securing a smooth take off for the industry.
