Akufo-Addo To Face ICC

By Nana Akua Tweneboah-Koduah

Truly these are not the best of days for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; the twice defeated presidential candidate of the NPP as some of his staunchest supporters have began singing his political requiem with each passing day.

Those who vowed to stand by him as long as it takes for him to wrestle political power through the back door are quietly telling Akufo-Addo that the future looks very bleak and that his chances of getting the results overturned in his favour looks too tall a mountain for him to climb.

These admonitions are coming from no mean NPP personalities than Ex-President JA Kufuor, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and Dr. Wereko-Brobbey among others. These personalities and many more are privy to conversations between the United Nations, The United States and British Governments and Nana Akufo-Addo over the past few days whereby Akufo-Addo was told in plain language that all their intelligence reports indicate that he had lost the election and that the best thing for him to do was to concede defeat and allow Ghana to move on.

But as stubborn and arrogant as Akufo-Addo can be he told the personalities from the UN, United States and Britain who had the conversations with him to go to hell and that he will do everything within his power to get the election results overturned in his favour.

Akufo-Addo is further reported to have told them that they should mind their own business because this is an issue involving Ghana and that nobody can dictate to him on what he should or should not do. Remember Akufo-Addo did the same thing to the AU Chairman, Boni Yayi when he paid him a visit a day after the election results were declared in favour of President John Mahama and asked him to go with the will of the people by conceding defeat.

When personnel of those countries realized that they were not making any traction as far as their conversations with Akufo-Addo were concerned, they placed their cards on the table by warning Akufo-Addo that if he spills any blood in Ghana in his quest to attain power at all cost, they would have no option than to bungle him to face the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Remember Charles Taylor and Laurent Gbagbo have all gone that route by facing the ICC for war crimes.

It was after the warnings by the International Community that got JA Kufuor and Obetsebi-Lamptey among others very scared. They realized that if they do not act fast and reason with Akufo-Addo who has decided to unleash his thugs to cause mayhem in Ghana starting from this week, the NPP will totally disintegrate if Akufo-Addo is arrested.

As I write, there is immense political pressure on Akufo-Addo from the power brokers mainly from the Ashanti caucus to concede defeat by Friday December 21, 2012 in order to save the party from further political embarrassment. But they are not having it easy as Akufo-Addo has indicated that he is prepared to fight till the end since this is his last political hurray in the country’s political history.

What many people with knowledge to the current impasse in the NPP camp cannot fathom is why Akufo-Addo is currently listening to his own voice rather than the voice of the people. It is reported that many key figures in the NPP are steaming with anger as they have realized that Akufo-Addo is tearing down the NPP and does not even care if the NPP disintegrates.
