Ghana’s opposition leader campaign confined to his residence

and town hall meeting- New Diplomatic Cable Leak

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, leader of Ghana’s largest opposition political party has been described as “weary and aged elite who has confined his campaign activities to his home and town hall meetings”.

A diplomatic document sighted by TodayGhanaNews.com authored by a western country to access the political situation within countries in West Africa which are preparing for election in 2015 and 2016 have so far accessed opposition candidates in Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Mali and Benin.

The leader of Togo's main opposition party, Mr. Jean-Pierre Fabre, the 62-year-old head of the National Alliance for Change (ANC), was accessed to be “hardworking and intelligent but has no chance to win over the incumbent President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe”,

The Diplomatic Cable’s prediction on the just ended Presidential Elections was accurate and precise. There was mention of former president Olusengu Obasanjo’s exit from the PDP to ACP, and that it will have a meaningful impact on the chances of president elect General Muhammadu Buhari. Nana Addo who led, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to two conservative elections but lost to ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidates Professor John Fiifi Atta Mills and the current President John Dramani Mahama, celebrated his 71st birthday last month.

The diplomatic cable described the NPP flag-bearer as “a popular politician but old age and ill health have confined his campaign activities strictly to his official residence and town hall meetings”. Nana Addo’s chance of winning the 2016 presidential elections was therefore described as “a difficult task” Since Nana Addo was elected as the flagbearer of the NPP to recapture power from the NDC, most of his political activities have been centered round his Nima residence, and a recent dinner meeting with party sympathizers in London. His running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a relatively young person has been spearheading the party’s major political activities while Nana Akufo-Addo, whose face will be on the ballot paper is conspicuously missing in action. The aggressiveness he exhibited during the 2012 general elections has virtually been watered down.
