Ghana's wheelchair tennis star McLean Dzidzienyo says he can still make it to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games despite gaining just a point at the ITF Wheelchair Futures Championship which was held in Manchester, England last week.
Dzidzienyo won one out of the three events he participated in and he believes his defeat in the other two matches was as a result of playing under flood lights.
Dzidzienyo now has an option to participate in more international wheelchair tournaments to make it to the Paralympics games.
"My dream of representing Ghana at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo is still on course. If I had won all my matches at the just ended Futures tourney I would have gotten automatic qualification.
Now I have to play more international matches and get ATP points to qualify", he told tennisgh.com.
He continued: "What caused my defeats in the first two matches was playing under flood lights for the first time but in all my performance wasn't bad."
Coordinator of the Ghana Wheelchair Association, Mr. Henry Larbi in an interview with tennisgh.com expressed dissatisfaction with the player's performance but was quick to lay the blame at the door step of the local association.
"I was not happy about his performance, but I won't blame McLean. It was due to lack of support from the Ghana Tennis Federation and sponsorship to adequately prepare him for the tournament", he said.
