The sport of Tennis and its development in Ghana has received a massive boost with the news that many companies and experts are ready to support the game in the country. SportsInGhana.com understands that two foundations in America have confirmed that they will come down to assist and develop Tennis by the end of this month. They want to build more Tennis courts across the country to enhance talent recruitment and development.
Enoch Amartey, Chairman of the Ghana Tennis Association disclosed this to SportsInGhana.com after last Saturday’s ‘President’s Cup’ tennis tournament at the newly refurbished courts at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra. The occasion was to formally inaugurate the Tennis courts which were destroyed during the reconstruction of the stadium ahead of CAN 2008.
“We are very happy that the courts are finally back and ready for use, it means that we shall now have more tournaments to develop our players. Our focus will be on the Juniors’ programme, we want to unearth more talents at very young ages so we can develop them for the future,” Mr. Amartey said.
The inauguration was sponsored by UBI, one of the new oil companies in the country. UBI also financed the one-day competition organized to mark the occasion which was won by Accra Lawn Tennis Club. Accra Stadium Club Men came second with Accra Stadium Club ladies finishing third.
The GTA Chairman also confirmed that seven of Ghana’s Tennis players have been selected to represent West and Central Africa at the All-Africa Junior Championships in Abuja, Nigeria early next month.
“The signs are good and I can assure the nation that we are going to enter into Davis Cup play very soon. We want to take Tennis back to the top and we need the support of all,” Mr. Amartey told SportsInGhana.com.
