DATE: JANUARY 20TH-21ST 2012

They called him Mr. Sinclair, Zigbeee and with each passing shot they yelled ‘ooooooooo’. This was a devout tennis player and coach who hailed from OSU. Abraham N. Owuo, a Royal to the throne of Osu, Kinkawe spent most of his life on the tennis court until his death.

Coach Owuo won various tennis Tournaments, the most recent before his death was the AFKO Veteran’s division open which he had won several times. After playing tennis for several years, Coach Owuo became engaged by the Ghana Education Service as a coach. His unique style of coaching enabled him to coach many children at one time and he emphasized on the basic but yet the foundation of the game the grip, footwork, the forehand and backhand strokes after that he allowed you to hit the ball against the wall as a practice court till you perfected your stroke.

Coach Owuo never took money from any child that he coached. From the little pay he received from GES and the diplomats that he coached, he concentrated on young girls as well as deprived and street children. It was through the efforts of coach Owuo that led to the development of a lot of girls in tennis in the early 90s, most notable amongst them was Alima Mohammed.

An annual tennis clinic in his honor and memory has been instituted for all that Coach Owuo contributed. The maiden workshop will be held this weekend at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club. The Coaching staff will be made up of veterans players; Peter Annan, Narh Tetteh, Coach Paul Dowuona, Coach Abeeer and others.

The workshops target group will be tennis ball boys, deprived children and street children who have an interest in the game of tennis. The workshop will introduce participants to rudimentary skills of the game, forehand, backhand, volley, serve and overhead. There will be lectures on game situations, and various strategies to use during tournaments. Also athletic trainers and Doctors will be present to screen the players and advice on principles of training design, Body Mass Index, Blood Pressure, and Flexibility Test will all be evaluated on site for all participants.
