Minister donates trophies

Sheike Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minster has presented fourteen trophies to the Accra Lawn Tennis Club as part of his contribution towards the maiden Senior Tennis Competition which ended on the Club's premises at the weekend.

The Minister pledged to donate all trophies in subsequent competition, which according to the organizers, will be organized twice a year from next year.

Shaike Quaye who said his donation stemmed from the government's effort to halt the present declining standards in sports in country expressed the hope that Ghanaians would take to sports as one of the most effective means of keeping health and preventing diseases.

He encouraged the association to organize more of such events for both the young and senior generation in order to build a healthy Ghana.

Mr Peter Annan, a member of the organizing committee told the GNA Sports that the aim of the competition was to bring the former national stars together and raise funds through competitions to finance similar tourneys for the junior side.

He said the both the Ghana Tennis Association and the Club which jointly organized the championship have been looking for ways to raise funds to bring the future stars together by way of such tournaments as a first step.

He appealed to sports enthusiasts to come to the aid of the associations. In the final event of the ten-day competition, Sampson Ahimakwa and Anne Wagener defeated Lawrence Lartey and Yarley Matedorf 6-3, 6-4 in the mixed doubles competition.

Brain Benneh and Emmanuel Addy, the pride of the Graphic Communication's Group sold out a fascinating men singles final.

The former who maintain his dominance throughout play defeated Addy 6-3, 6-2 to lift the topmost awards comprising a trophy, racket bag, Polo T-shirts, tennis balls and a bottle of wine.

Other participants received souvenirs for their efforts.
