Sakumono Tennis Club will host the maiden edition of the Junior tennis league which will take off with over 50 juvenile tennis stars set to do battle for various categories of prizes at stake.
The league, dubbed “Baj Freight Junior Tennis League” is organised by leadership of the Sakumono Tennis Club in collaboration with other clubs in the Tema and Ashaimanand will be solely sponsored by the Baj Freight and Logistics Ltd based in Tema.
The participants, who were selected based on their performances at their various clubs, will be divided into 5 categories – Under-8, U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16 to play in a round robin after which players who accumulate more points will be declared winners.
According to the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr Kojo Stephens, the remaining league matches, after tomorrow, will be played once in a month on every second Saturday till the end of the year.
Mr. Stephens further stated that the main objective of the league is to promote education and health through sportsas well as to unearth talents in children around the Sakumono, Tema and Ashaiman areas.
“The Youth Tennis League intends to revive the juvenile tennis activities that once produced champions like Henry Adjei Darko, Michael Nortey, salifu Mohammed and others who marketed Ghana beyond the shores of this country” he said.
Winners from the various categories will have their school fees catered for and will receive sponsorship to participate in other tennis tournaments while all participants will take home medals and tennis items.
