Six Tennis players win trophies at 2017 McDan Junior Open

Six young tennis players annexed trophies at the McDan Junior Open tourney held at the Tennis courts of the Accra Sports Stadium at thrilling tennis fanatics with a hallmark of skill and aptitude.

Aaron Asante, Mariama Ibrahim, Aleona Ankrah, Lameck Bagerbasey, Tracy Amaph and Bright Nortey won trophies accompanied with a scholarship worth GHC2000 cedis after beating their counterparts for not only the bragging rights but to receive a call up to represent Ghana at the African Junior Open, to be held in Morocco.

More than One hundred young tennis drawn from Ashiaman, Tema, Winneba and other Tennis communities participated in the week long tourney hosted at the courts mostly occupied by the Osu community players.

Amos Asante gave his best but was not enough to beat the tough Lameck Bagerbasey from Winneba who mauled him 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the thrilling boys Under 12 final encounter.

Tarkwa based player Tracy Amaph overcame the prowess of Sekina Adams from Tema to win the girls U-12 division 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 whilst Ishmael Dowuona lost 7-6, 6-3 to Bright Nortey of Osu in the boys U-14 category.

In other categories, Aaron Asante, Mariama Ibrahim and Aleona Ankrah won in the boys U-16, girls U-16 and the girls U-14 respectively.

As part of the award prizes giving to the short list of semi-finalists, the sponsors of the event Twellium Industries awarded them with soft drinks. The runner ups also walked away with GH¢1,500.00, scholarships

Isaac Aboagye, the President of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) expressed his utmost gratitude to the sponsors for investing in the development of Tennis in the country, saying that, “this is exactly what we need to develop the budding talents in the sport.”



“This has been a successful competition and the future looks bright for Ghana Tennis. There are many talents in the country.

"This event came at the right time as when the junior team will be competing in the Africa Championship and this will help them to correct the rough edges and deliver. We will continue training from here.”

Mrs. Abigail Mckorley of McDan Group of Companies said she was excited that the organizers have been able to resurrect the Juniors tournament after ten year in exodus adding that the tournament is here to stay.
