TFG launch National Junior League to nurture Tennis stars for Ghana

The management of the Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG), sponsors of the ongoing National Junior Tennis League, have called on parents and leadership of various tennis clubs in the Greater Accra Region to encourage their wards to take advantage of the competition which is meant to unearth talents and horn their skills.

Launching the league last Saturday at the tennis arena of the Accra Sports Stadium, the Executive Director of TFG, Mr Kofi Atakora Owusu Afriyie noted that the 10-week competition was aimed at nurturing the juvenile players and to keep them competitive in future local and international tournaments.

“We hope that these children, especially girls will participate fully in this league in the subsequent weeks, because our aim is to help them become competitive and improve in their games.”

“Tennis used to be big in this country back in the days but lately we don’t get to hear much about it so our aim is also to bring back the sport to the top where it belongs as well as to help shape the careers of these children,” said Mr Owusu Afriyie.

President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Mr Isaac Duah, who addressed the athletes and officials at the event, charged the players to focus on their education as they combine it with the sport.

“Play tennis but don’t forget to study hard because education is the key to success. If you are playing tennis and schooling at the same time, you can access various educational scholarships worldwide so never abandon your books.

About 100 juvenile players drawn from eight tennis clubs in Accra, including the Atomic Tennis Club, Korle-Bu Tennis Club, Accra Lawn Tennis Club, Ghana Tennis Club at Adabraka, 37 Army Officers Mess Tennis Club and BaboSports Academy participated in the opening games for boys and girls Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 categories

After the first round matches BaboSports Academy are on top National Junior Tennis League log with 3 points defeating Stadium B tennis Club 3-0 in the boys 12 and under, 2-1 in the boys 14 and under and 2-1 in the boys 16 and under.

Korle-bu tennis Club are second on the league log with also 3 points ousted Army Officers Tennis Club-37. Winning boys 12 and under 3-0, boys 14 and under 2-1 and boys 16 and under 1-0.

Third on the league table is Stadium B tennis Club also with 3 points made them selves proud as they surpass Atomic Tennis Club 3-0 in the boys 12 and under, 2-1 in the boys 14 and under and 3-0 in the boys 16 and under.

Fourth on the league is Ghana tennis club, Adabraka defeating Kaneshie Tennis Club(Kalatac) 2-0 both boys 12 and 14 and under.
