Jeff Bagerbaseh defied all the hot shots of number one seed George
Darko to grab the exciting McDan Tennis Open held at the Accra Sports Stadium
over the week end.
The final match which started on Saturday and ended on Sunday due
to poor visibility saw brains compete against brauns and skills versus power.
At the end of it all, it was Bagerbaseh, son of a tennis coach who
did not disgrace his dad, Noah, but had to fight back after going down in the
first set on Saturday, came back strongly and crafty to win not only the favour
and support of the fans, but the 1,000ghc at stake.
The product of Kumasi Poly who had been playing tennis since age
seven under the guideline of his father sad he was very happy to be the latest
champion in town and dedicated his trophy to his fans and family members in
Tamale.
He disclosed to yours truly that he is going to surprise the world
by becoming an African and World star.
“I want to reach the top of World Tennis and I want to plead that
more sponsored programmes like the McDan Tournament are held to expose the up
coming players because Ghana has so many hidden talents” he said.
According to Jeff Bagerbaseh, he relied on his rich experience to
overcome his taller and very powerful opponent.
He expressed his gratitude to McDan Ghana Ltd and the Sports Media
for the exposure.
Runner-Up George Darko said it was hard luck that robbed him,
because he too the lead, but had to bow to his challenger who won the two sets
on Sunday April 27, 2014 at the center court of the Accra Sports Stadium.
Enoch Amartey, President of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF)
congratulated the players and officials and commended the sponsor for saving
the sport which had been facing financial problems.
He thanked McDan for paying Ghana’s affiliation fee to the International
Tennis Federation.
