Accra, Aug 26, GNA - Mr Albert Tettey, Co-ordinator, Physical Education Programme of the Ghana Education Service, was on Thursday elected the new Secretary-General of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).
He polled 26 votes ahead of Dr Opoku Fianko, who had nine votes, and Mr F.M. Dickson, four votes, at an election held at the GOC biennial congress in Accra on Thursday. Mr Joe Kwarteng, Assistant Secretary of the GOC, for personal reasons, declined to participate in the election immediately he was nominated by one of the delegates for the post.
The position has been vacant since March 23, this year, when the ex-Secretary-General, Mr Horsnby Odoi, tendered in his resignation. According to Mr B.T. Baba, President of the GOC, there was no need to repeat the issues that led to his resignation since the majority of the members already knew about it.
Mr Tettey promised to serve with loyalty and with all his might. Earlier, drama unfolded before the beginning of the congress when one delegate moved for the postponement of the election. According to him, certain "developments on the ground" were not conducive for the holding of the election.
When asked about those developments, he said "signals from the Ministry of Youth and Sports showed that the Ministry was advocating for the postponement. The majority of members did not agree to his motion since he was unable to state those 'developments' and 'signals'.
The delegates then agreed to vote on the issue to determine whether the majority was in favour or against the postponement. Twenty-nine delegates voted that the elections should go ahead while nine voted against it. Two votes were disqualified.
