John Mahama, the incoming president, has declared his intention to give the University of Ghana back control of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
He claims that the move is necessary to fulfill the hospital's fundamental mission.
Mahama pointed out that in order to guarantee operational effectiveness and high standards of care, the UGMC was designed by the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills to be run by a university subsidiary.
He bemoaned the fact that the facility, which is now run by the Ghana Health Service, only uses 40% of its potential.
In order to lessen the need for Ghanaians to travel to South Africa and India for medical care, the president-elect stated that it is now imperative to return to the previous management system.
He bemoaned the Ghana Health Service's inability to adequately manage UGMC due to the large number of institutions already under its control.
Mahama plans to optimize the facility's capacity to offer cutting-edge medical services locally after activities have been fully scaled up.
