The failure of numerous local assemblies to put the Ghana National Fire Service's (GNFS) suggestions for fire prevention into practice has raised concerns.
The fire service claims that many assemblies have not taken the required actions to guarantee that these recommendations are implemented, even though they have issued a number of rules and recommendations targeted at lowering the danger of fire in communities.
A terrible fire that ravaged Accra's Kantamanto Market in the early hours of January 2, 2025, left vendors reeling from their losses. In a couple of hours, the market—which was renowned for its lively atmosphere and wide variety of goods—was reduced to ashes.
In an interview with Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 2, 2025, ADO1 Alex King Nartey said that while the service does a good job of presenting recommendations to prevent the occurrences of yearly fire outbreaks, particularly in the Kantamanto area, many district assemblies fail to put those recommendations into practice.
Every time we do an inquiry, we supplement it with recommendations that, if strictly adhered to, will help lower the frequency of fire outbreaks. Unfortunately, dealing with certain of the assemblies becomes problematic when we make such recommendations.
When you look at a market like Kaneshie, you'll agree with me that you can't recall the last time there was a fire. We haven't heard of any free outbreaks in the region since the previous time it burned, because the GNFS's advice were followed. Having a fire post would have been ideal for a location like Kantamanto.
"They ought to make room for that so that the officers who will be assigned to the post can conduct inspections in these areas and, if they see any dangers, ensure that any fire that breaks out is put out to prevent it from spreading," he said
