Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in parliament, has stated that the Speaker of Parliament and the NDC must abide by the Supreme Court's decision.
The Supreme Court has sided with an appeal filed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, overturning Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin's decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The seven-member panel, presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, ruled in favour of Afenyo-Markin by a majority vote of 5-2 on Tuesday.
A further explanation of the decision would be given later, Chief Justice Torkornoo stated.
"We can only thank God, and this is a moment for all of us to rally around the choice we made in 1992, Democracy that is the part NPP majority took to ensure that we do right with the law," Afenyo-Markins told the media following the Supreme Court's decision. "We can only say that we expect our colleagues that are the NDC, including Mr. Speaker, to respect the outcome of this case, so that we move on as a nation," he added.
"All we have is our democracy and the peace of the country, and Ghana is a shining example of democracy in West Africa and Africa overall," he continued. This is another accomplishment that we should be proud of, and it has to do with constitutional interpretation rather than the NPP's opposition to the NDC.
