Renowned Ghanaian clergyman Archbishop Duncan Williams has become embroiled in controversy following his prayer for opposition leader John Mahama. Williams disclosed during a recent church service that he had received criticism from President Nana Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) after meeting with other clerics to pray for Mahama.

Williams defended his behavior by saying he doesn't support any political party and that he loves Ghana. Citing his prior prayers for Akufo-Addo during his opposition campaign in 2016, he underlined that it is acceptable to pray for the opposition leader. "Did I not pray for you when you faced difficulties? So what's the issue with offering prayers to opposing parties? Don't they also hail from Ghana? Archbishop Duncan Williams calls Akuffo Addo into question.

The Archbishop's remarks have sparked a contentious discussion on religion's place in politics. Supporters view Williams' prayers as a sign of harmony and the good of the country, while others claim that his acts weaken the position of power held by the ruling party. One thing is certain as the discussion rages on: Ghana's political climate has been rocked by Archbishop Duncan Williams' audacity in offering prayers for the head of the opposition. How this will affect the future of the nation is a matter best left to time.
