Ghana's 2024 elections are expected to be a close contest as the polls change, according to a University of Ghana economist.

In an interview with Vim Lady on Okay FM, Dr. George Domfe, a development economist at the University of Ghana, offered his perceptive perspective of the changing political landscape in the run-up to the 2024 elections.

Dr. Domfe noted that the surveys show a story of growing rivalry and that "the reality is that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is gaining ground, even though many are eyeing John Dramani Mahama as a likely victor." "Mahama has seen his support drop to 44%, which is a significant change from his earlier standing in the 50s, while Bawumia currently leads with 47%."

Voter opinion has drastically changed, according to the most recent survey data, notably those from late October, especially in important areas like Greater Accra and Oti. "The NDC was riding high just a few weeks ago, but recent data shows a shift in favor of the NPP," he said, highlighting how unpredictable this election cycle is.

Dr. Domfe identified a pattern that would be problematic for the NDC in a setting where voter participation is crucial. He clarified that the NPP has effectively reached out to a previously disengaged electorate by saying, "We are witnessing some voters who initially opted out of participation now rallying behind Bawumia."

Additionally, he emphasized the allure of the NDC's famous 24-hour policy, which appeals to those who are desperate for change right now. He said, "This initiative is hitting a chord." However, except from Bawumia's digitalization plan, the NPP's campaign doesn't seem to have a strong narrative.
