Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana's 9th Parliament were incensed with Speaker Alban Bagbin for referring to their caucus as a "Micro-Minority" caucus.
The Speaker called the NPP a "Micro-Minority" during a statement made during proceedings on Wednesday, January 8, 2024, which infuriated the MPs.
Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, voiced his disapproval of the Speaker's assessment on behalf of his team.
"Bagbin would not have been re-elected as Speaker of the 9th Parliament without the support of his caucus," he said.
According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, who make up the Majority Caucus, were plotting to remove Speaker Bagbin, but the NPP MPs resisted in order to secure his reelection.
With all due respect, Speaker, I will address your assertion that it is your responsibility to safeguard the "Micro-Minority." This House's rules provide for both the majority and the minority, Mr. Speaker. We have no "Micro-Minority," Mr. Speaker. This is a protest from the minority caucus over the description you provided, Mr. Speaker. This, Mr. Speaker, is unacceptable to us.
"Mr. Speaker, we supported the motion to elect you as well as your plan. We opposed when the so-called majority was even plotting against you, Mr. Speaker. We prevented that plot from happening. It was us, the conscience minority, Mr. Speaker," he raged.
"This House's conscience is this minority," he continued. The so-called majority was unable to get its members to attend the House today; 61 of you are not present. The term "Micro-Minority" is unacceptable to us, Mr. Speaker; we are the Minority, simplicita. Speaker, gently, kindly, Mr. Speaker, tell us what we are. The minority is who we are. Our group is not Micro-Minority.
Accepting responsibility, Speaker Bagbin stated that he could not call the NPP caucus a "Micro-Minority" for the purpose of documentation.
However, Afenyo-Markin became even more enraged when he sarcastically pointed out that the House leaders are free to call the NPP caucus "micro-minority." She declared, "Nobody should ever use the term'micro-minority' to describe the NPP in parliament."
