Akufo-Addo Seeks "Safe Passage" for Cousin Ken Ofori-Atta Amid Corruption Probe

Sources indicate that former President Nana Akufo-Addo is deeply concerned about the escalating legal and public scrutiny facing his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. The controversy stems from Ofori-Atta's nearly eight-year tenure and involves serious allegations being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The ex-President, reportedly worried about damage to his family's reputation and his administration's legacy, is insisting that Ofori-Atta—who has been in the United States since February citing a kidney-related medical condition—return to Ghana immediately to address the charges. However, Akufo-Addo is simultaneously seeking assurances of a "safe passage" to prevent Ofori-Atta from being arrested or publicly humiliated upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport.

To this end, the former President is considering appealing to current President John Dramani Mahama for such an arrangement. However, insiders within the Mahama administration state that the President is firmly opposed to any interference, believing the law must take its full course without special treatment. Some officials further argue that Ofori-Atta must first account for and potentially refund any allegedly misappropriated state funds before any discussions about his return or leniency can occur.

The core of the allegations involves an improper contract between Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), for which Ofori-Atta has been charged in absentia with 78 counts, including conspiracy to influence procurement for unfair advantage. The OSP alleges the scheme caused a financial loss to the state exceeding GH¢1.4 billion and committed the country to further potential payments of nearly US$2.8 billion without parliamentary approval. Other cases under investigation relate to the National Cathedral project and an ambulance procurement contract.

Last week, an Accra High Court granted bail to several other co-accused individuals, including former GRA officials. The OSP has initiated extradition proceedings against Ofori-Atta and one other absent accused, having declared Ofori-Atta a "fugitive from justice." Despite the serious charges, Ofori-Atta remains in frequent contact with associates and continues to manage his private business interests from abroad.

The case has been adjourned to December 17, 2025.
