Christian Tetteh Yohuno (COP) is the current Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Ghana Police Service.

Early Life and Education

Christian Tetteh Yohuno completed his secondary education at Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School and Okuapemman School.

He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Following this, he completed an Executive MBA in Project Management at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

Career

Yohuno joined the Ghana Police Service in 1985/1986, marking the beginning of a remarkable law enforcement career spanning over 40 years.

He has climbed through the ranks, attaining various significant positions, including:

• Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations)

• Divisional Commander for Accra Central (2007)

• Regional Operations Commander for Accra Metropolis

• Accra Regional Commander (2013–2015)

• Director General of Police Intelligence

• Director General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD)

In 2012, he was recognised with a grand medal for his exemplary service to the Ghana Police Service.

On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama officially appointed him as the 31st Inspector General of Police, with his swearing-in ceremony taking place the following day, March 14, 2025, where he succeeded COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

As of February 19, 2026, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been in office for approximately 11 months (342 days).

Tenure Extension

In November 2025, shortly before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, the Police Council approved a two-year extension of his tenure beyond the standard retirement age for civil servants.

During early 2026, he implemented a major reshuffle of the top police command to enhance operational efficiency and approved the promotion of over 12,000 officers, addressing long-standing backlogs.

Background

IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno hails from Somanya-Adjikpo in the Krobo area, and he identifies as a Ga-Dangme from Krobo and Nungua.

Beyond his professional commitments, Christian Tetteh Yohuno is a devoted family man, happily married and blessed with children.
