Background
Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie is a distinguished Ghanaian Supreme Court Judge, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Ghana.
He was nominated for the position on September 21, 2025, and following a vetting process, was approved by Parliament.
He was officially sworn in as Chief Justice on November 17, 2025.
Political Career
Baffoe-Bonnie's legal career began when he was called to the Bar in Ghana in 1983.
He served as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta.
In 2006, he ascended to the position of Appeals Court Judge, and in June 2008, he was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge.
Appointment as Acting Chief Justice
Before becoming the substantive Chief Justice, Baffoe-Bonnie served as Acting Chief Justice from April 22, 2025, until his swearing-in on November 17, 2025.
As of February 2026, he has been acting in the role for approximately 10 months. His appointment followed the suspension and subsequent removal of Gertrude Torkornoo and was made by President John Dramani Mahama.
Notably, his appointment was challenged by the removed Chief Justice on October 16, 2025.
Early Life and Education
Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie attended local primary and middle schools in Goaso, where he completed his Middle School Leaving Certificate in the late 1960s.
He pursued his secondary education at Konongo Odumase Senior High School, where he completed both GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels.
He later attended the University of Ghana and the Ghana Law School for his legal studies.
Election Petition
In 2013, he served on the panel of Supreme Court Judges that ruled against a petition regarding the 2012 Ghanaian general election.
Personal Life
Baffoe-Bonnie is the son of Opanyin Baffoe-Bonnie and Ama Kyerewaa, hailing from Breman in Kumasi.
He is married to Patience Baffoe-Bonnie and is a father, although the specific number of his children has not been disclosed.
He is also the brother of Kwesi Sainti Baffoe-Bonnie, owner of the Network Broadcasting Company Limited, which operates Radio Gold FM in Ghana.
