The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has explained the cause of power outages in parts of the capital on May Day.

A May 2, 2024, statement from the ECG said the situation was triggered by rainstorms that hit the capital on May 1.

The rainstorm it stated had affected 7 of its substations hence the power challenges experienced in parts of Accra.

It listed the affected stations as: Station H -Dzorwulu, Burma Camp L, Station D - Avenor, High Street AH, La Trade AJ, Lakeside Estate; and Gbawe.

"ECG and the Ghana Fire Service are working together to drain all flooded primary substations to ensure a swift restoration of power supply.

"We wish to assure our cherished customers and all stakeholders of our commitment to ensuring a stable power supply, and apologise unreservedly for the effect of the outage on our daily lives," the statement signed by William Boateng, Director of Communications, read.

The statement comes hours after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said in his May Day speech that the power supply challenges being experienced in recent months had ended.
