Accra, May 22, GNA - The National Deaf Basketball team is stepping up preparations ahead of the 2nd World Deaf Basketball Championship scheduled for June 20 to 30, 2007, in Guangzhou, China.
The team is expected to pitch camp in Sekondi, Western Region, from May 22 to 28, 2007.
Against this backdrop, the technical team of the Association of Sports for the Disabled (ASFOD) has short-listed 18 players for the forthcoming camping, after which 16 would be selected for the World Championship.
Ghana has been roped into Group D, which comprises Australia, Slovak, and Israel.
Sixteen countries would be taking part in the World event. Meanwhile, ASFOD would also be taking part in an African Zone III Championships slated for May 30 to June 4, 2007, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Ghana would participate in Athletics, Power-lifting and Table Tennis.
Thereafter, ASFOD will battle it out in an Open Athletics Championship, which starts from June 7 to 10, in the United States of America (USA).
It will also seek an Athletics World Cup qualification berth at the 17th Boiling Point-Canada, on June 17, 2007. Prior to this summer's All-Africa Games, in Algiers, Algeria, a five-time Paralympic gold medallist, Jane Driscoll who operates a non-governmental organisation (NGO) known as 'Determined To Win', has pledged to sponsor ASFOD's Athletics team on a training tour of the US.
