World Youth Cup: Ghana For Finals......

Wed, 4 Jul 2001 Source: BBC

Ghana deservedly reached the final of the Under-20 World Cup by beating Egypt in Cordoba.

They were outplayed in the first-half but dominated after the interval and scored two goals late on.

Abas Inusah scored Ghana's opener in the 83rd minute with a smartly taken header and Mohamed El Atawy then put into his own net just moments later to put the result beyond doubt.

Ghana will now play in the final of the Under-20 World Cup for the second time.

Their last appearance came in 1993 when they were beaten 2-1 by Brazil in Australia.

Ghana's opponents in the final will be either Argentina or Paraguay.

Lel-Yamany chance

Egypt dominated the early stages of the match, which were played at a frenetic pace.

Abou Moslem had an excellent chance after just eight minutes, when he found himself one-on-one with Ghana keeper Maxwell Banahene just eight yards out from goal.

He aimed for the far post, but struck his effort weakly and it was easily saved.

Ghana gradually worked their way into the game, which became increasingly sterile.

Chances were at a premium as both sides began to play more conservatively.

Egypt had a great chance near half-time when the excellent Moslem broke down the left and sent a superb cross into the area.

Mohammed Lel-Yamany had an easy chance to head the ball home, but strangely elected to try an overhead kick, which was easily gathered.
Ghana were rejuvanated after the interval and almost the entire second-half was played in the Egyptian half.

Right-winger Ibrahim Razak was outstanding for Ghana and he set up his side's opener in the 83rd minute.

He curled in a free-kick from the right taken and Inusah emphatically headed home from close range.

Egypt's misery was compounded moments later when El Atrawy put into his own net after attempting a back pass when his keeper was off his line.
