The President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has urged the media to uphold and maintain impeccable ethical standards as the country prepares for the upcoming December general elections.

According to him, the period preceding elections is always of great significance in information circulation, and any misunderstandings can have a profound impact on the electoral outcomes.

Addressing attendees at Radio Univers' 30th-anniversary celebration launch on April 26, 2024, Mr. Dwumfour cautioned the media to refrain from any conduct that could disrupt the peace and tranquility of the nation.

“All of us need to recognize and appreciate that the freedom of the press that we so cherish gives journalists, publishers, and other media the ability to uncover the truth, hold the powerful accountable, and share information that educates the public.”

“As the December 7 elections approach, I know many politicians will try to leverage their relationships with certain radio stations to make divisive and dangerous comments, attempting to turn the media against their opponents." I urge all media outlets to prioritize and advocate for only decent messages on their platforms. It is said that elections often challenge democratic institutions like ours, but resilient democratic institutions will rise to the challenge. I hope that the media will rise above the challenges that characterize elections."

Mr. Dwumfour further explained that elections play a pivotal role in the longevity of democracies. Therefore, the media must ensure that they rise above any challenges that pose a threat to this role.

As Ghana prepares for a climactic electoral process, Dwumfour's impassioned plea serves as a timely reminder of the media's vital role in safeguarding the democratic process and promoting a peaceful and transparent election environment.
